Learning Maps

Children in Room 11 will each develop their own learning maps at the beginning of Term 3. The maps are a tool which allows teachers and parents to see how autonomous a child is in his/her learning and how aware he/she is of the resources (people, places and things available for them to learn.

Jade explaining her learning in Reading

Thank you, Jade!

Growth Mindset

Children in Room 11 have been learning about Growth Mindset and how it can help improve their achievement.
'Recent advances in neuroscience have shown us that the brain is far more malleable than we ever knew. Research on brain plasticity has shown how connectivity between neurons can change with experience. With practice, neural networks grow new connections, strengthen existing ones, and build insulation that speeds transmission of impulses. These neuroscientific discoveries have shown us that we can increase our neural growth by the actions we take, such as using good strategies, asking questions, practicing, and following good nutrition and sleep habits'. - Mindset Works.

In Room 11 we promote: effort, perseverance and seeing mistakes as an indication that we need to tackle a problem in a different way in order to succeed.

Mrs. Whitmore: 'Jade, what helps you with your learning is reading?
Jade: 'My mum, Mrs Whitmore, my nanny, books, Kumon and mistakes!'

We have also been learning about the Learning Pit. Which is a metaphor of the learning process. It illustrates the discomfort of not knowing and how through collaboration with others we find the answers ourselves. As a result we increase our learning.

Discussion: 'Is Fairness the same as Equal?'
Children in Room 11 initially came to the consensus the to be fair we have to be treated equally, but through questioning and peers opinions Isabella came to the conclusion that some people deserve more and some less depending on the effort they apply in a given task. Everyone agreed with her statement!
